Sports in Glendale
Glendale is the site of two major sports venues: University of Phoenix Stadium and Gila River Arena. Both venues are part of the Glendale Sports and Entertainment District development plan, meant to spur growth in the sparsely inhabited Yucca district. Both venues are owned by the City of Glendale.

Arizona Cardinals

​​University of Phoenix Stadium is the home field of the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL. The team formerly played at Sun Devil Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University in nearby Tempe, and in 2006 moved to University of Phoenix Stadium.

Designed by architect Peter Eisenman, the stadium was featured on The History Channel TV series, Modern Marvels because of its roll-out natural grass field. The stadium hosted Super Bowl XLII in 2008. Almost 1 year later on January 18, 2009, it hosted the NFC Championship Game as the Arizona Cardinals defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 32-25 for the franchise's first ever Super Bowl berth. The 26th annual WrestleMania event was held at University of Phoenix Stadium on March 28, 2010.​

The University of Phoenix Stadium will host Super Bowl XLIX in 2015.

Arizona Coyotes

​​Gila River Arena and Westgate City Center are adjacent to University of Phoenix Stadium, and is the home of the Arizona Coyotes of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Gila River Arena, Arizona’s Premiere Sports & Entertainment Center, is a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose facility located at Loop 101 and Glendale Avenue . The arena anchors the 223-acre, Westgate Entertainment District, the “crown jewel” of sports and entertainment complexes . The Coyotes, the Gila River Indian Community and Gila River Casinos signed on Sept . 10 , 2014 a nine-year partnership agreement that includes the naming rights for the venue . This is the first federally recognized Tribal naming rights deal with a sports venue that houses one of four major professional sports leagues in the country. 

Spring Training

​​A state-of-the-art baseball facility like no other, Camelback Ranch - Glendale (Ariz.) is the Spring Training home of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox. Located on 141 acres at 111th Avenue and Camelback Road, this Sonoran Desert-inspired, two-team facility offers baseball fans more than top-quality playing fields and facilities; the site also features picturesque walking trails, landscaped grounds and an orange grove. The first-rate baseball facility includes more than 118,000 square feet of Major and Minor League clubhouse space, 13 full baseball fields and three half-fields. It is also the largest in the Cactus League with a capacity of 13,000, which includes 3,000 lawn seats, 12 luxury suites and a party deck. Fans enjoy the ballpark's modern amenities and design as well as dramatic mountain views that create one of the most inviting Spring Training atmospheres in all of baseball.

Vizio Fiesta Bowl

University of Phoenix Stadium is also used for college football and other events. The stadium hosts the annual VIZIO Fiesta Bowl bowl game.The BCS National Championship college football championship game also circulates to Glendale. The 2011 BCS National Championship Game was held in Glendale on January 10, 2011. The Auburn Tigers defeated the Oregon Ducks 22-19.

The 26th annual WrestleMania event was held at University of Phoenix Stadium on March 28, 2010.​
