For the first time in its history, Glendale Chamber of Commerce has endorsed candidates in the mayoral and city council election.

The chamber is endorsing three candidates, all for re-election: Mayor Jerry Weiers, and Councilmembers Ian Hugh and Ray Malnar. Hugh and Malnar are running unopposed.

The chamber did not endorse either candidate in the contested Yucca Council District race. Those individuals are incumbent Councilmember Sam Chavira and former Councilmember Joyce Clark, who is hoping to reclaim her Yucca District seat.

In a press release, the chamber said it’s public policy council conducted a thorough review of each candidate to include a written questionnaire and personal interview before sending the official recommendations to the board of directors for approval.

“Candidates were selected who have distinguished themselves as knowledgeable and supportive of issues positively affecting the business community in the City of Glendale,” the release said.

Elaborating further on the endorsements, Jeff Blake, 2016 Chairman of the Board and president of The Blake Group, said, “The Glendale Chamber Board of Directors is pleased to endorse candidates who have demonstrated accessibility and collaboration in support of promoting interests most important to our local businesses. The Glendale Chamber continues to build strong relationships and looks forward to our continued partnership with the mayor and city council on issues which help our business community and our local economy prosper.”

“The Glendale Chamber’s Public Policy Council is pivotal to the mission of the chamber as we look to support business friendly candidates,” said Robert Heidt, Glendale Chamber President and CEO.

“Throughout this process, we heard from all those running for office and have endorsed candidates who had the clearest understanding of the challenges facing the business community and those whose policies align with our initiatives to foster a pro-business environment focused on the creation of quality jobs, along with business retention and expansion.”
