September 4th, 2014 (Phoenix AZ) – The Glendale Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Glendale Chamber of Commerce have signed the UNITY Pledge. They join other member based organizations in this commitment including Local First Arizona, the Greater Phoenix Black Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Women Business Owners, the Greater Phoenix Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Asian American Professionals, AZ Chapter of Hospitality Sales & Marketing Assn. Int'l., the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, The Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce, the Scottsdale Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Arizona Technology Council. Collectively, these member based organizations represent over 8,000 businesses throughout Arizona. The goal of the UNITY Pledge is simple: to encourage Arizona businesses, organizations and individuals to stand up for diversity.

Created by ONE Community, a member based coalition of LGBT and allied individuals and businesses, the UNITY Pledge is a public declaration to support and advance workplace equality and equal treatment in housing and public accommodations for LGBT individuals and their allies in Arizona. The business community and like-minded individuals understand that if they want to be competitive in attracting and retaining top talent, they must have diverse and inclusive workplaces.

“The Glendale Convention & Visitors Bureau is honored to sign the UNITY Pledge on behalf of its members and continue our long-standing partnership with ONE Community. Glendale and the West Valley are open for business to everyone; we are an inclusive community that welcomes all businesses, residents and visitors,” said Lorraine Pino, Tourism Manager for the Glendale Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Since launching the UNITY Pledge, over 1,000 companies and non-profit organizations with over 500,000 employees have signed the UNITY Pledge including PetSmart, Maricopa Community Colleges, the Mayo Clinic, United Healthcare of Arizona, Allstate, Nationwide, Liberty Mutual Insurance and Arizona State University.

“The Glendale Chamber of Commerce is proud to support ONE Community and the values of diversity, inclusion and equality in business. The commitment to a diversified workforce allows businesses in our community, region and state to recruit and retain top talent which ensures Arizona’s competitive edge in a global economy,” added Robert Heidt, President and CEO
“We applaud the Glendale Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Glendale Chamber for signing the UNITY Pledge. They have done so because it is right, and because it is good for the business of Arizona,” states Angela Hughey, President of ONE Community. “Businesses small and large know that embracing a diverse customer and employee base is essential to the sustainability of their business and to the state of Arizona.”

In the United States, the LGBT community makes up a combined $830 billion in spending each year. These professionals, families, and individuals are also some of the most talented in their industries. Moreover, according to a report from the Center for American Progress, workplace discrimination against LGBT employees costs businesses $64 billion each year. Smart businesses want to attract LGBT professionals and travelers. Smart businesses value diversity and know that we have a responsibility to treat this community with the same dignity and respect as other communities.
